Frequency of Infection in Donor Eyes Post Mortem: a Method of Obtaining Sterile Eyes for Corneal Grafting.

چکیده
THE use of corneal grafting has increased considerably in the last 15 years and it was therefore thought of interest to survey the frequency of infection and the bacterial strains found post mortem in the conjunctival sac and on the cornea in eyes suitable for use as donor eyes. We have also investigated the possibility of reducing the frequency of infection by pre-treatment with antibiotics. The normal bacteria of the cornea and conjunctiva have been the subject of several previous investigations. Fick (1887) published his findings in 85 conjunctival sacs in 57 individuals; 49 of the conjunctivae were normal and bacteria were found in 79-6 per cent. of them, 18-5 per cent giving a polymicrobial culture, and 12 per cent. being sterile. 36 conjunctivae showed evidence of chronic catarrh and all gave pos'ltive cultures. Barfoed (1953) examined the bacterial flora in 501 normal conjunctivae; 34 1 per cent. gave a pure culture, 21 4 per cent. gave a polymicrobial culture, and 44-5 per cent. were negative. In 533 cases of acute conjunctival inflammation, bacteria were present in 86-3 per cent. Rycroft (1956) found that 46 out of 107 donor eyes were infected.

A new medium for the storage of donor eyes for corneal grafts.
THE EXPANSION of modern keratoplasty has increased the demand for suitable donor eyes, but for obvious reasons supplies are limited. This shortage has stimulated research into the best methods of preserving and storing donor eyes in order to eliminate any preventable factors which may be responsible for loss or wastage of this precious material. Although it is not a universal practice, in this ...

BACKGROUND To evaluate main features of donor tissue that may influence clinical outcome or complication rate after deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK). METHODS Donor tissue parameters of 84 consecutive corneal donor grafts used for big-bubble DALK surgery between June 2011 and December 2014 in 84 eyes of 84 patients with disorders of anterior corneal stroma were correlated to clinical...

Background and Objective: Keratoconus is a disorder in cornea characterized by constant thinning and prominence that can result in vision defect. Due to ultrasonic changes in the corneal structure caused by keratoconus disease, its rigidity and biomechanical properties are subject to some changes. In this regard, the present study was conducted to determine the correlation of biomechanical feat...
متن کاملAttachment for a Tudor Thomas corneal graft stand.
DONOR material for corneal grafting is not readily available. In exploring all sources, it was thought that one could use material which would otherwise be wasted if it were possible to cut satisfactory lamellar grafts from excised corneae. The attachment to be described is the result of experiments conducted with this purpose in view. The idea originated from a desire to use corneae from eyes ...
